PHMB is active against gram – and gram + bacteria, fungi and yeast
including MRSA, Pseudomanas aeruginosa, VRE etc.
PHMB has been in general use for about 60 years with no evidence of
resistance. It is used in cosmetics, contact lens solution, swimming pools
etc
Mode of action
PHMB acts by electrostatic interactions, this mechanism is based on the
character of the molecule and the distribution of electrical charges. This
interferes with the bacterial cell metabolism, by prohibiting the cells
ability to absorb any nutrients or dispose of waste products. This
effectively killing the bacteria without damaging surrounding healthy cells.
PHMB is not adsorbed by cells and tissue , nor absorbed by them, and
therefore cannot interfere with the metabolism of the body.
